General information about ATP

ATP is a tennis association that organises major tennis competitions. ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) is often called the ATP world rankings. Why? Because ATP ranks the performance of male tennis players. At the end of the season, the best eight tennis players of that season compete in the ATP World Tour Finals. The ATP calendar is usually completely filled with tournaments from January to November.

When you visit an ATP tournament, you will find only male tennis players. You can see the female tennis players at WTA, also known as the Women’s Tennis Association.

Australian Open

Australian Open is the first grand slam tournament of the year, played annually at Melbourne Park (Australia) since 1986. Every year, some 780,000 spectators come to watch this phenomenal tennis spectacle. January is high summer in Melbourne, so a great time to escape the Netherlands and watch high-level tennis!

Roland-Garros

Roland Garros was the first Grand Slam tournament in the “Open” era in 1968 and since then many tennis greats have played on the famous clay courts, including Björn Borg, Ivan Lendl, Mats Wilander, Gustavo Kuerten, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. In 2022, Nadal became the first player in tennis history to win 14 titles at the same Grand Slam championship. If you visit Roland-Garros, you may also immediately add a white panama hat to your packing list. What strawberries with whipped cream are to Wimbledon, white panama hats are to Roland-Garros. Some 2,000 are sold every year. No worries: you can buy them there too so!

Wimbledon

Wimbledon is the oldest and biggest grass tennis tournament in the world. Wimbledon takes place around late June/early July in the Grand Slam tennis calendar. Wimbledon is also one of the few tennis tournaments that requires players to wear white clothing. Because the tournament is considered the most impressive, Wimbledon is a bucket list item for many tennis fans.

US Open

US Open is last on the tennis Grand Slam calendar and is held in New York. The main matches are played at Arthur Ashe Stadium, in front of some 23,771 spectators per session. Until 1977, the tournament took place in Forest Hills where it was played on grass courts that were replaced by gravel in the 1970s. Currently, it is played on hard courts. Furthermore, the US open is the tournament with the highest prize money for tennis players. The 2023 total prize money was $65.0 million.
