We kick off, of course, with the absolute highlights of the year: the Grand Slams. The big four are circled in red in every tennis fan’s diary every year. From Australian Open in January to the US Open in September; these were the 2024 Grand Slams.
Winner: Jannik Sinner
It promised to be the year of Jannik Sinner. The Italian got off to a flying start by winning the men’s Australian Open. In the semi-finals, he beat defending champion Novak Djokovic and in the final, Daniil Medvedev was waiting for him. Sinner fell behind 2-0 in sets, but still took victory in a spectacular final!
Winner: Aryna Sabalenka
On the women’s side, Aryna Sabalenka successfully defended her title in Melbourne. And as if that achievement wasn’t big enough, she also did so without losing a set in 2024. In the final, she defeated Zhen Qinwen and was crowned winner of Australian Open 2024.
Winner: Carlos Alcaraz
The 2024 King of Clay is Carlos Alcaraz. In the final, he dealt with Zverev. The German took a 2-1 lead, but Alcaraz showed in the last two sets why he is the king of clay. His victory at Roland Garros 2024 made him the youngest tennis player to win a Grand Slam on three different surfaces.
Winner: Iga Swiatek
Iga Swiatek was crowned Queen of Clay in 2024. This was no less than her fourth Roland Garros title and third consecutive. This also made her the third player ever to win three consecutive RG titles. In the final, she settled with Italy’s Jasmine Paolini in two sets.
Winner: Carlos Alcaraz
Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz continued his excellent form at Wimbledon. The final was a repeat of the year before: none other than Novak Djokovic awaited. The result was not a repeat. Indeed, Alcaraz managed to win 3-0.
Winner: Barbora Krejciková
In the women’s event, it was not Swiatek who came away with the win. She fell in the third round. So the playing field was wide open. In the end, the battle was decided by Barbora Krejciková. She beat Jasmine Paolini in the final 2-1.
Winner: Jannik Sinner
At the last Grand Slam of the year, it was Jannik Sinner who came away with the win again. The home crowd was hoping for a win over Taylor Fritz, but to no avail. Sinner prevailed 3-0.
Winner: Aryna Sabalenka
In the women’s event, there was also an American in the final, Jessica Pegula. She was up against Aryna Sabalenka, who was keen for a win after losing in last year’s final. She was eventually too strong for Pegula in two sets as well.
The 2024 tennis season had an extra dimension. After all, the Olympics were being held. And tennis at the Games always has an extra charge anyway. The Paris 2024 edition was all the more special because it was the last time two tennis icons competed. For both Andy Murray and King Rafael Nadal, Paris was the end of their Olympic adventures as players.
The gold in men’s singles finally went to Novak Djokovic. This was the only prize missing to complete his Golden Slam. Afterwards, the Serb said this was his best win ever.
In the women’s event, it was China’s Zhen Qinwen who walked away with the top prize. This was also China’s first gold medal in tennis singles.
But this was certainly not the only thing. The tennis season had many more monumental moments.
– Farewell to the Maestro: we touched on it briefly before, but surely 2024 will go down in the books as the year of Rafael Nadal’s farewell. The Spanish maestro will end his magical tennis career at the Davis Cup. An emotional moment for all tennis fans around the world.
– Super Sinner: Besides winning the Australian Open and the US Open, the Italian won another four titles on hardcourt. He became the new world No 1 and also won the ATP Finals. As icing on the cake, he took the win for Italy in the Davis Cup.
– Swiatek and Sabalenka keep winning: It was no surprise that Swiatek and Sabalenka, for the WTA Finals, are ranked No 1 and No 2 in the WTA rankings. They achieved one victory after another. Together, they accounted for three of the four Grand Slams.
